Getting Into the Weed: Potentials and Pitfalls Affecting Medical Use

In this session you can expect to hear about our human endocannabinoid system and the basics of cannabis pharmacology, including differing effects from different dosage forms of cannabis or cannabinoid medicines. Dr. McQueen will also talk about short-term physical effects and drug interactions, then summarize with known and possible long-term harms of cannabis.  What do we still need to know about risks with cannabis or cannabinoid use?

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe in simple terms the endocannabinoid system and which body systems are most affected by it
  • Differentiate the effects of THC and CBD and the physical and psychoactive roles they play
  • Describe major differences in effects between common dosage forms of cannabis or cannabinoid medicines
  • Describe common adverse effects and the populations at greatest risk for severe harm from cannabis use

Dr. McQueen is a Clinical Associate Professor, Pharmacy Practice and Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  She completed a two-year fellowship in natural product research at UMKC and specializes in evidence-based dietary supplement information. Teaching responsibilities focus on evidence-based therapeutic use of dietary supplements and alternative medicine, sterile and non-sterile compounding, and self-care.
